There are a few factors that determine the length of speargun you should buy – your size and what you are most likely to spear. Essentially, the longer the gun the more power and range. The shorter the gun, the more manoeuvrable and easier to use and load. If spearing in shallow water you would prefer a shorter gun, while bluewater spearing requires longer guns with more power and range. Years ago, the simple answer would have been a 110cm (length of barrel) with a single 16mm band. Now, we tend to sell a lot more shorter guns.

In southern Australia targeting common reef fish, we would recommend any of our guns from 90cm to 110cm. QLD and WA generally go for longer guns around 110cm to 120cm.

Most women go 70cm to 90cm with twin 14mm rubbers. While our kids guns range from 70cm to 80cm with twin 12mm rubbers. We custom make all our guns so contact us and we can set up a gun that suits you and requirements.

Wettie Float boats are well designed, tough, stable and well priced. They are an excellent spearfishing safety tool providing a means to remove fish from the water immediately after shooting. This reduces possible interactions with sharks, sting rays and seals. Float boats provide a highly visible dive marker with flag to meet legal requirements and increase safety. Float boats reduce drag and extend your diving range. The well made in NZ. We have used one of our boats for over 5 years, dragging over bommies and generally treating it roughly. It has never taken on water and is structurally sound. Avoid poorly made, thin walled and overly priced copies. You only need to pick up and feel the lightness of poorly made models that will pierce or crack easily.

Open Cell Wetties are very warm wetsuits. Thickness is dependant on where in Australia you dive, the type of diving you are doing, depth and time in the water. Also, some people feel the cold more than others. More thickness does mean less flexibility and also more lead is needed which can reduce mobility and general comfort in the water.

Small boat – small reef fish – Southern Australia. Low drag. Good internal volume for size. Fits in standard dive bag.

Medium Boat – can take an average kingfish and large snapper – NSW and VIC. Chill bag insert available. Insert has extra gun straps and storage. Excellent for shore diving. Popular for abs, crays and scallops.

Large boat – takes several large pelagics – WA, SA, QLD, Northern NSW. Good for comp diving.

Check dimensions on website. All sizes except hard top model fit the backpack straps. All models come with standard cover and flag. Small and Medium can be posted cheaply with AP. Large requires more expensive courier delivery.

There is no simple answer to this as it depends what you are trying to achieve. We use and like both set ups. The Wettie closed roller set up offers a simple, accurate, light, cheap, low maintenance and durable option which presents as a very tidy set up that is quick to reload. Offers power and efficiency in 60cm to 130 cm options.

Twin loop rubbers also offer some benefits. Easier loading for ladies, kids or veteran spearos. The ability to power up/down by only loading one rubber or using various load points on the shaft.

Overall, whichever option you choose, it is important to consider factors such as shaft diameter and length, balance, barrel construction, etc

We recommend matching your diving activity to the level of reinforcement in your suit. If you mainly spear and freedive and want comfort and flexibility go the Reef or Signature Armour suits. If you rock dive, do a lot of cray hunting or commercial diving, then consider the Commercial models. The Ocean Armour is popular as a good middle of the road suit. Reinforcement can extend Wetsuit life but can impact flexibility.

Wettie has four different commercial models to meet the diverse needs of the Australian commercial industry. Here is a simple breakdown of the 3 suits.

Wettie Commercial – yamamoto 39 neo, load pad and scupper, latex sealed seams, Kevlar elbow pads, powertex backside, hard wearing fish scale knees to offer great abrasion and flexibility, knife pocket on right thigh. A range of colours.

Signature Commercial Open Cell – Signature Neo, no load pad or scupper as standard, fly zipper or scupper can be added, compression resistant yet great flexibility, name labels. Reinforcements the same as Wettie Commercial above. Black Knight Camo.

Signature Commercial Lined – a lined signature commercial as above. Charcoal based heat retention lining for those not wishing to lube up. Very popular with Australian ab and urchin divers. Black Knight Camo. All the commercial reinforcements above.

Womens Workhorse – the only women’s commercial dive suit in the world.  Yamamoto 39, fish scale knees and Kevlar elbow pads. Latex sealed seams. Scupper and fly zipper can be added. Awesome hard wearing suit, looks great, ideal for commercial and scuba use.

Fins range in price more than any other product we sell. $50 for plastic fins up to $650 for Carbon fins. They all do things well. We recommend the following:

Plastic Snorkelling fins – around $50, entry level, small, low effort required, low performance, great for kids.

One Piece Plastic Freedive Fins – around $100 extremely tough, positively buoyant, can be too stiff for smaller men, women or youth, give great power but demanding on the legs. Great for entry spearing, and ab/cray diving. Eg Wettie Reef Freedive Fins

2 Piece Plastic Fins – around $150 to $180. Combine a foot pocket and plastic blade. Better for women and those wanting softer blades to moulded one piece fins. Ability to change blades if you move to composites and carbons. Eg Wettie Ultimate and Signature Fins

Composite Blades – around $300-$500 with pockets. Good performance blade for intermediate to advanced spearos and freedivers. Offer a good level of strength and impact resistance. Colourful design options.  Available in a range of stiffness to suit all builds. Eg Leaderfins, Penetrators.

Carbon Blades – around $600+ The highest level of performance but require more care as they can be more fragile to impact. Extremely light and available in a range of stiffness. Recommended for intermediate and advanced spearos and freedivers. Eg Leaderfins Carbon, Penetrators.

Wettie use Yamamoto 39 neoprene almost entirely across their range. Cast from limestone in Japan it a great baseline standard for any wetsuit. Yamamoto 39 offers great flexibility, warmth and durability in a Wetsuit. Its also environmentally friendly.

The Signature Series Wetties include the Signature Armour, Signature Commercial – Open Cell or Lined and Signature Smooth range. These models incorporate Wettie’s own neoprene that offers a new wetsuit experience for those seeking the best. Details are kept secret, but Signature Neoprene offers improved flexibility, fit, durability, compression resistance and buoyancy control. Ideal for those spearing to deeper depths, commercial or scuba divers.
